Foreigner(bule) in Southeast Asia trys bizzare food for the time in the city of Jakarta in Indonesia. Watch as I meet my friend that will introduce me to some of the local Indonesian favorite dishes. First we head to the restaurant, she seems eagerly excited to share this experience with me. We pick a table to sit, we sit down and she starts ordering for us. We start of with a regular dish called “lo mie” its a Chinese dish served with wheat flour noodles with vegetables and meat. This dish is delicious, and I am sure anyone would like this it’s very eatable. Next she grabs a dish that looks a bit scary in my opinion. Its called ”ceker ayam” which is chicken feet. Yes that is right, I’m about to try chicken feet. My heart is pounding at this very moment terrified because you can see the shape of the chicken feet still cooked. I take my first bite and to my surprise it’s actually good, it’s cooked in sweet sauce. But then as I take a second bite I can’t get over the texture its a bit weird. It has a gooey slimy texture as you bite into it. Now here comes the final dish it looks a bit familiar but not quit. This dish is called “kodok” which is frog. Now at this very moment I am actually more terrified to try this than the last dish. I am so nervous, that I am in tears. I take the first bite with my eyes closed and its not what I imagined. It’s ....................
better. Its really good and savory. I start to laugh immediately in relief.The flavor is a lot like chicken mixed with tilapia fish. Which in my opinion its really tasty. I quickly finish this dish, what turns out to be my favorite dish so far. Now my friend suggests going to another spot since I seemed to really enjoy the frog dish. We head to another location where there is live music and a crowded scene.She orders, a new dish which is fried frog. Since I enjoyed eating frog as a dish, I am a bit more happier when the new dish comes out. It looks really good and smells good too. We order beer to combine with this dish, as it is known to be the perfect combination. I take my first bite and its even better than the last frog dish. Its crunchy, salty, buttery, and oooo so delicious. We toast to the night with a local Bintang beer. Cheers to a interesting fun evening with good food, drinks, company, and music. I will be back again to eat this yummy dish.
